Best selling children’s book

When you start writing a children’s book, or any book for that matter, it never is about getting on that best-selling list. It is more about having an inspiration and putting it down on paper, it is about bringing characters to life, it’s about the accomplishment you feel when you finish writing it and about the pride you feel when it is published.

No-one sees the hours you put in – quite often getting up extra early before you go to work just so you can write down ideas that you had during the night, or sitting behind a computer after work or at the weekend when there’s glorious weather outside just because you get your creative juices flowing. There have been many a times when I wished there was a machine that would record or type down all my thoughts during the day when I am not sitting in front of my laptop because when inspiration hits you, it can be like a huge wave and ideas just come and come, and you know that by the time you get home, half of them will be forgotten or sentences will be slightly different and not as striking as two hours ago. Sure, there’s always the pen-and-paper method, but my hand cannot match the speed of my brain when it gets going.

Then, there’s the part with illustrations. When I write, I always envision what illustration I want to go with a certain text, but unfortunately I have not been blessed with the gift of drawing. That is why I type down a description for each illustration, and even this doesn’t mean that the illustrations will be exactly the same as I had envisioned. The first step is to find an illustrator, or two or three, whose drawing matches the style you envisioned for your book(s), but since each illustrator has their own way of drawing, the illustrations will most likely not be a 100% match to what’s in your head. If the illustrator surpasses your expectations, then it’s great, but it can be hard to explain what you want something to look like when you cannot draw a sample (i.e. ‘Make it look cuter.’ – but my cute my not be the same as illustrator’s cute).

Once you go through all the necessary paperwork (getting an ISBN, formatting the book so it suits online stores such as Amazon or Lulu or Barnes and Noble), I think one of the best feelings is when you get a copy of your book. Sure, you’ve seen it a million times on your computer, but somehow holding an actual book in your hands makes it much different. And all you can do from then on is that it finds an audience – that people respond well to it, that they like your characters, that they like your plotline, that they like the illustrations, that they provide you nice feedback, that they perhaps recommend it to someone, and that they order the second story in the series. If that goes well, then you just might make it onto the best-seller children’s story list. If not, at least you know that you acted when inspiration called.

As you can see, I’ve added three covers in the text – these are the three children’s books I have written so far. They are now also available in epub format, so if you want to buy your copy, simply click on the image of the book you want to buy above.

If you want to buy a paperback format or your children prefer reading them on Kindle or tablet, simply click here.
